Your mother gave me an incredible honor/ task months ago.
What is it, you may ask? She allowed me to come up with ideas for our future baby’s
room. As you already know, your silly
father thought you were a boy at first (and p.s. I have amazing ideas for your
future brother’s room) but I hardly had any ideas for a girls room. What would I
know about a little girl’s room after all?! What could I possibly come up with?!
I thought, thought, and thought some more. You are, after all, named after a little girl who was brave, wild, and free spirited. Your name sake alone dictated that it’d have to be a room unlike any other baby girl’s room. Moreover, you’ve already showed such personality by what you’ve jumped for joy about! The two times I remember you freaking out the most in your mom’s stomach were during a New York Mets baseball game and during the Tony awards. You truly are our child in every sense of the word.
So, with that being said, I didn’t want to paint you a pink room. You’re already too cool for that. I decided to go against conventional wisdom and actually paint your room grey. I must confess, knowing your mother as I do, this color was easy to pick due to purple being a NECESSITY but it wasn’t just for that reason alone.
I chose the tree because, like your name sake, I want you to be a free spirit. This world is tough. I can’t even imagine what it will turn into the older you get. However, I hope you overcome the world with your faith, spirit, and love. When the world is dark and grey, I want you to continue to grow and blossom into the woman you want to be. Don’t be afraid of what others think of you as you grow up! Continue to keep your eyes looking up to God and you, like this tree, will stand out in beauty and grace.
All poetry aside, so you know, this tree was not easy to put up! I thought it would take 30 minutes to an hour to put up but boy was I wrong! It took over 5 hours due to how slow it took to adhere the decal perfectly against the wall! You, knowing your mother as you do, know how it had to be just right! Each and every leaf you see on your tree had to be placed there by hand. They look great so clearly you can tell who put them there! (Ahem…your mother.)
Lastly, I picked the quote on the wall as a constant reminder to your mother and me of how we consider you a present from God. Babies aren’t the easiest of roommates. You cry…a lot, wake up at weird hours, go to the bathroom on us, and seem to make the most unreasonable demands. You will take up all our free time but you will also consume something even greater…our hearts. This little quote is just another reminder of how truly lucky we are to call you our daughter (especially helpful at 3 in the morning).
Years from now, I am sure that I will embarrass you by the music I jam out to, the clothes or hairstyle I wear, and especially the way I cheer you on at whatever you choose for your hobby. However, even if it is ONLY this ONE time, you have to admit I did pretty great at designing your room…Right?!
P.S. Being your dad is awesome!
Beautifully said, Andy!
ReplyDeleteI see you reference her name several times but has it been revealed?
