They say that, when your time comes, you see it in
flashes. I am not sure of this but, if it is true,
a polka dot baby
dress will be my very first flash as a father.
Before I get it into that, however, you must know a little
more to the story. There is one role that...if I do say so myself…I’m pretty
great at. The role of being an Uncle! I have already set up several bribes…ahem...traditions
to ensure that as well! Whether it be giving your older girl cousin, Emma,
flowers whenever I see her (one I hope to do more soon), attempting to make all
your boy cousins into Mets fans (not sure if it’s working yet), or just
spoiling them whenever I have the chance, I have been lucky to be around most
of them their entire life and have done quite well!
Over the years, I’ve spent the most time with your boy
cousins. Heck…I would like to think I was your Cousin Oscar’s third word! I’ve
changed diapers, fed them bottles, and learned all of what little boys like! So,
when it was your time to be announced, I thought for sure you would be a boy! After
all, it is practically all I know of when it comes to babies.
Then you made yourself known to be my daughter. I was
shocked. I must confess, I don’t know a thing about little girls! I don’t know
how to change your diaper yet, not sure if little girls are fed the same way
with bottle, and…well…I’m lost. The next few days, I was in a daze and, to be
honest, a little scared of what kinda dad I would be for a girl.
Then your mom showed me a polka dot baby dress that you
may one day wear. All fear, all anxiety, and anxiousness left as I looked down.
It was at that very moment, I became so happy you were going to be MY little girl.
Now a days, I dream about having tea parties with you, dressing up and going to princess movies with you, and surprising you with random flowers on your dresser. I dream about you playing sports, being in shows like your mom, and just being the coolest kid around!

It is in those thoughts that I am reminded that God knows
our heart and knows what we really wish for.
My wish was for you all along.
P.S. Being your Dad is awesome!
And what a lucky little girl she will be...I'm sure you will play "pretty pretty princess" and dress Barbie up for tea parties. She will also know all about sports, fish, and the joy of having your face licked by Lady and Falkor. Good job son. We look forward to the day of seeing you hold your daughter.
ReplyDeleteSo sweet. We're also so excited to meet you, Lyra!
